It has been a while, and once again the warmer months are fast approaching. With that comes my drive to be fitter again, at least for a few months. This time around after much pondering about meal prep, I finally took the plunge and signed up to Simmer. It seemed the most attractive option from the companies out there offering introductory discounts.
Given my regular choice of food is simple, pale and bland, this is a real change for me. That said I have talked for a while about adding more colour and variety to my diet, so this was the perfect opportunity. Talk about going outside my comfort zone, selecting foods I would not usually choose. However I was brave and made some bold choices.
Now, when you see the adverts of the meals served neatly up on a plate, or freshly placed inside the container they look beautifully presented. Once they have been bulk made, packed, shipped and delivered they don’t quite look the same. That said, they still look delicious and I can’t believe I am saying this, but they taste amazing too.
I really didn’t think I would like many of the meals, but much to my surprise I really do like some of them, and more surprisingly it’s the more out there ones that I like. Mac cheese pops up quite frequently in the meals, as well as lots of chicken, which makes me very happy.
The plan offers up to 3 meals a day, one being breakfast, then a lunch, and a dinner. What I found very quickly was that I am not cut out for big breakfasts every day, and also that after a good breakfast and lunch, my appetite for dinner was much reduced, and some days I struggled so much I actually skipped the evening meal or breakfast all together.
If money was no object I would happily have them every week, but as the discount fades away, and the price rises, my appetite goes with it. At the moment with a 30% discount, 15 meals a week, 3 a day for 5 days comes in at around £80 a week. Which sounds a lot, but when you break it down, it actually isn’t that expensive. But cheaper options DO exist, and I am now exploring those options.
With all that said, three weeks in, counting the calories carefully daily, I have lost a bit of weight, and feel better in general for it. So I am keen to keep going one way or another to stay on the right path.
In addition to the above, I was looking at my Garmin nutrients goals and noticed my protein is really high. Turns out that over 50’s really do benefit from increased protein in their diet to help prevent muscle loss, especially while trying to lose weight. So just as well that I am having a really high intake at the moment then eh!
When I started on these meals, I also decided to go back to using creatine too. For the first time in about 25 years I should add! As luck would have it, that too offers the benefit of preventing muscle wastage, as well as cognitive benefits too. The cognitive benefits are a new one to me, and were definitely nothing that anyone was focusing on 25 years ago. So go me for making the right decisions at the right time!
All in all, I feel I am in a good place and on the right path to a healthier year, and maybe years ahead. How long can I stay on the right path this time around? Only time will tell. At the same time I am also getting more active again, so fingers crossed it all goes hand in hand, and by the end of the year I will be in a much better place.
Mentally I feel like I am in a really good place right now, and I am frickin delighted about that 🙂
